Making Infection Prevention Program Impacts Across Multiple Care Settings

Infection prevention programs play a vital role in protecting patient health. Our infection preventionists collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the continuum of care to implement targeted interventions and create meaningful change in how care is provided.  IP&MA infection preventionists are driving measurable improvements in acute care, behavioral health, and inpatient rehabilitation settings. Here’s how some of their efforts are making a difference.

Acute Care Successes

One IP&MA acute care facility achieved an impressive milestone: 24 months without CLABSI or CAUTI, through 2023 and 2024. But their teams did not settle for achieving zero – they also focused efforts on continued risk reduction and reduced annual foley catheter days by 57% and central line days by 29% in 2024.

Another acute care facility partnered with IP&MA and also made exceptional strides, reducing CAUTIs by 60% and CLABSIs by 50% in 2024. These efforts prevented three CAUTIs and one CLABSI, translating into an estimated cost savings of $42,950.(source, source)

These achievements are more than numbers; they represent—dedication, teamwork, and patient safety improvements that lead to safer hospital stays for all patients.

Behavioral Health Impact

In behavioral health settings, IP&MA infection preventionists partner with inpatient psychiatric care teams to create safer environments for both patients and healthcare workers. These collaborations are yielding significant reductions in healthcare-associated infections.

At one facility, infection rates decreased by 9%, while hospital-onset skin and soft tissue infections dropped by an impressive 69% in 2024. At another facility, results included a 10% reduction in urinary tract infections and the complete elimination of hospital-onset skin and soft tissue infections from 2023 to 2024.

These metrics reflect a commitment to providing safer care environments and improving lives through focused infection prevention efforts.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Transformation

In inpatient rehabilitation settings, data on the cost of healthcare-associated infections and length of stay in the inpatient rehabilitation setting is limited, but focused infection prevention efforts can have significant impacts on patient safety and operational efficiency.

At a rehabilitation facility where IP&MA provides long-term program management, focused interventions led to a 63% reduction in CAUTI rates and a 100% elimination of CLABSI cases in 2024. Using conservative acute care estimates, these efforts likely prevented three CAUTIs and three CLABSIs, saving the facility approximately $93,000 and avoiding 49 excess patient days.(source, source)

Behind these results are teams working diligently to protect vulnerable patients and enhance care quality.
